Bears split on final day of AMF Memorial

 
 
UPLAND, Ind. – The University of Pikeville volleyball team wrapped up play in the AMF Memorial tournament at Taylor University with a win and a loss on Saturday.
 
The Bears defeated the University of St. Francis (Ill.) 3-1 in the opener and lost to Campbellsville University 3-1 in the nightcap.
 
UPike (2-5) will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 6 when it visits the University of Rio Grande (Ohio). First serve is set for 2 p.m.
 
Bears 3, Fighting Saints 1: UPike was close to a sweep in Saturday's opener. After winning the first set 25-19, it slipped 25-23 in the second before closing it out with wins of 25-15 and 25-17.
 
Sophomore Cassidy Rivas had 14 kills to pace the Bears, followed by senior Theresa Romero with 13. The Bears had 55 kills while limiting the Saints to 39. Junior Chloie Brinton had 29 assists and was joined in double figures by junior Magda Vicencio with 10.
 
Senior Alondra Ayende recorded eight service aces, the most by a Bear this season. Junior Lanie Hawley was also solid, recording five.
 
Hawley and sophomore Olivia Chapman had five blocks each, with both having one solo and four assists. Romero added four. Sophomore Ashtyn Filkins led three Bears in double figure digs with 15. She was joined by Ayende with 14 and Brinton with 12.
 
Tigers 3, Bears 1: UPike opened with a 25-19 win before falling 25-14, 25-18 and 27-25.
 
Rivas continued her torrid day with 20 kills. Ayende followed with eight. Brinton had 34 assists in the loss.
 
Defensively, Chapman had four blocks (two solo, two assists) while Hawley contributed three. Rivas led in digs as well with 16, while Filkins had 14.
