Big second half powers Bears past Rams

BLUEFIELD, Va. - Four second half goals powered UPike men's soccer to a 4-2 road victory over Bluefield University Wednesday evening.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the UPike offense came out of the halftime break firing. UPike's first shot of the second half, which came off the foot of Juan Farkas, found the back of the net and tied the match in the 49'. Farkas' goal was made possible with an assist from Mahmoud Shech-Ichya.

The Bears' second shot attempt of the second half came two minutes later and ended the same way the first one did; in a goal. Yali Cohen, off an assist from Farkas, gave the Bears their first lead of the match in the 51'.

UPike's 2-1 lead was short lived, however. One minute after Cohen's goal, Bluefield's leading scorer, Adan Chavez, fired a shot on frame that was saved by Alejandro Iglesias. Chavez retrieved his own rebound and took another shot that leveled the score at 2-2 with a goal in the 52'.

After allowing the tying goal, UPike's defense would not allow another shot attempt the rest of the match. With the defense keeping the Rams at bay, the Bears offense went to work. Over the next 30 minutes of play, UPike registered seven corner kicks, two header attempts, and a shot on goal.

The Bears continued to turn up the heat on the Rams and broke the tie in the 81'. Juan Farkas put the Bears up 3-2 after scoring his second goal of the match. Two minutes later, Jakob Rus scored a goal to put the game out of reach. Rus's goal not only put the Bears up 4-2 but extended his goal scoring streak to three consecutive games.

Farkas' productive offensive day (two goals, one assist, five total points) moved him up in a few AAC statistical categories. Farkas is tied for first in the AAC in assists (3) and is tied for second in total points (9).

Wednesday's win over the Rams gives the Bears a 3-0-1 record in AAC play and a 4-2-1 record overall. The Bears will hit the pitch again Saturday for a 1 p.m. road match against Georgia Gwinnett.
