Men's soccer takes down Milligan

MILLIGAN, Tenn. – The University of Pikeville scored a goal in each half on Wednesday night to knock off homestanding Milligan (Tenn.) University 2-1.

The win evened the UPike record both overall, at 6-6-2, and in the league, where it stands 4-4-1.

Milligan is now 9-3-3 on the season and 5-3-2 in the conference.

The first half saw only three shots on goal, with two of them by UPike senior forward Juan Farcas. Fortunately for the Bears, Farcas' second shot landed in the back of the net.

The goal, his second of the season, was assisted by Yali Cohen and came in the 36th minute. It was also his second straight game with a goal.

Meanwhile, sophomore goalkeeper Alejandro Iglesias turned away the only shot on goal the Buffaloes recorded, and the Bears took a 1-0 lead to the half.

The lead grew in the 63rd minute when senior midfielder Alex Ward landed a shot in the top right corner of the net to make the score 2-0. It was the first goal of the season for Ward.

It was not until the 88th minute that the Buffs got on the scoreboard, coming on the first goal of the season by Isaac Lizotte. The assists came from Grayson Hammond to cut the lead in half.

Trailing by one, the Buffs managed only one shot the rest of the way, and it was blocked by the Bears.

Milligan had six shots on goal compared to four for UPike. Iglesias, however, had five saves for the Bears.

In addition to two first-half shots by Farcus and Ward's goal, the Bears got a shot on goal by junior midfielder Martin Larraguibel.

The Bears will play their home finale on Saturday with a special start time of 10:30 a.m. They will host Reinhardt (Ga.) University at Bob Amos Park in the game which will serve as senior day.
