Second-quarter explosion gives Bears win at Bluefield

 
BLUEFIELD, Va. – The University of Pikeville outscored Bluefield (Va.) University 30-5 in the second quarter en route to a 76-42 win on Wednesday night.
 
UPike has now won three in a row and is 13-11 on the season. More importantly, it is 12-4 in the AAC.
 
Bluefield is now 3-22 overall, 2-15 in the league.
 
The lead was 20-14 after junior Maddie Day sank three free throws with 8:53 left in the half.
 
From there, the Bears scored 23 unanswered points and outscored Bluefield 28-2 to end the half.
 
The Bears went 12 of 18 from the floor and 5 for 6 from the line in the quarter. Freshman Anika Stehbens had 14 of the final 28 points, with sophomore Jaaliyah Warren and freshman Sophie Adkins adding six each.
 
At the half, UPike led 42-22.
 
A jump shot by freshman Celina Mullins with 47 seconds left not only established the final score but also gave the Bears their biggest lead of the night at 34 points. For Mullins, it was her first collegiate basket as a varsity player.
 
Stehbens led four Bears in double digits with 20 to go with six rebounds.
 
The other three Bears to reach double figures all had double-doubles. Adkins recorded her third consecutive double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, senior Jaidy Mejia-Andrade had 12 points and a team-leading 14 rebounds, while junior Rachel Bush added 12 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Adkins added five assists while Mejia-Andrade blocked three shots.
 
Day led the Rams with 14 points. Freshman Zoey Snavely followed with 10 markers.
 
UPike will be back on the court Saturday when it travels to Waleska, Ga., to meet Reinhardt. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
