Baseball splits doubleheader at Milligan

MILLIGAN, Tenn. - University of Pikeville baseball split a road doubleheader at Milligan.

UPike's record is 3-4 (1-2 AAC) following today's results. The Bears are on the road again for their next game, which is a road doubleheader at Lindsey Wilson. First pitch for UPike and LWU is set for 12:00 p.m.

Game 1: UPike 9, Milligan 5

The Bears got the game started with four runs in the opening frame. Noah Brooks got the scoring started with a single to left to score Dominic DeCarlo. UPike added two more after Garren Gledhill doubled to score Francis Subero and Riley Paulino. The last run of the opening frame came via a sac fly by Mason Melton to score Brooks.

Milligan got one run back in both the first and second innings, and the Bears countered with one run in the third, then another in the fourth. In the third, the Bears made the Buffaloes pay for committing an error, and Paulino recorded an RBI single in the fourth.

Paulino recorded his second RBI of the game two innings later to extend the lead to 7-3. The Buffaloes scored one in the seventh, then Melton put the game out of reach with a two-run double. Richtter Castillo closed out the game to give the Bears a 9-5 victory in game one.

Kameron Brodeur improved to 2-0 on the mound after pitching 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and three strikeouts.

Game 2: Milligan 10, UPike 9

The UPike offense picked up where they left off early in game two, plating three runs in the top of the first. Brooks made it 2-0 with two-run double, then Gledhill singled to make it 3-0. UPike's lead did not last long, however.

Milligan would tie the game with three runs in the first, then scored two more in the second to take a 5-3 lead. In the third, Brooks crossed the plate for the second time after Gledhill recorded an infield single. Gledhill's RBI single cut Milligan's lead in half.

Milligan, who held a 5-4 lead, made the Bears' defense pay for their sloppy play in the fourth inning. The Bears committed four throwing errors, and the Buffaloes scored four runs. The teams would score one run each in the sixth, setting up for an eventful top of the seventh.

Trailing 10-5, UPike's offense got to work. Gledhill reached via walk, Melton reached via error, and Easton Mould recorded an infield single to make it 10-6. Two batters later, DeCarlo walked to load the bases with one out and Paulino up at the plate.

Paulino reached base via error but was thrown out at second base for the second out, but two runs crossed the plate. With the score now 10-8, Francis Subero singled to cut MU's lead to one. The Bears comeback, and the game, would end after Noah Brooks struck out swinging.

Milligan would win the game 10-9 and would take the series.
