PIKEVILLE, Ky. - University of Pikeville baseball extended its win streak to three after an 11-4 victory over Union Commonwealth Friday afternoon. UPike improved to 6-4 (2-2 AAC) with the victory over UCU.
UPike got on the board in the bottom of the first after Riley Paulino sent a fastball over the right field wall for his second home run of the season. Neither team would score again until the fourth inning when the Bears blew the game wide open.
The Bears scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth, with Francis Subero starting the rally after being hit by a pitch. Subero scored from first two batters later after a double by Mason Melton. Garren Gledhill made it back-to-back doubles, scoring Melton to make it 3-0.
With Gledhill on second and two outs, Easton Mould was hit by a pitch, then Tyler Brook walked to load the bases. Dominic DeCarlo made it 5-0 after a ground rule double, then Paulino hit a single to make it 7-0.
Union scored two in the top of the fifth, only to see the Bears counter with four in the next frame. Noah Brooks led off the inning with a double, then Joe Gagnon was hit by a pitch to get two runners on with no outs; Brooks advanced to third after a fly out by Melton, then stole home after a crafty set base running play.
Gledhill singled to put runners on the corners, then Mould flew out to center to score Gagnon and put UPike up 9-2. The Bears once again loaded the bases after back-to-back singles by Brook and DeCarlo, then scored a pair of runs after back-to-back walks. After five full innings of play, UPike held an 11-2 lead.
Union Commonwealth would score one run in the seventh and another in the ninth, and the Bears won 11-4. UPike finished the game with 11 runs on 14 hits and no errors. Union scored four runs on five hits and no errors.
Teague Van Dyke picked up his first win over the season. Van Dyke, now 1-2 on the year, allowed two runs on three hits and seven strikeouts through 6.0 innings of work.
Jake Maniago had his best outing of the season so far after 2.2 innings of relief. Maniago retired eight of the nine batters he faced, allowing just one run on one hit and a pair of strikeouts.
The Bears and Bulldogs will conclude the series tomorrow with a noon doubleheader at Hambley Athletics Complex.
