Bears sweep UCU, run streak to 5

The University of Pikeville completed the weekend sweep of Union Commonwealth University on Saturday, taking both ends of a doubleheader.
 
The Bears took the opener 12-2 in seven innings and then won the closer 9-5.
 
Sophomore third baseman Mason Melton had five hits while junior shortstop was on base eight times on the day.
 
UPike is now 8-4 on the season, winners of five straight. Their AAC mark is 4-2.
 
The Bears will be back in action on Tuesday, hosting Shawnee State (Ohio) University at 3 p.m. at Johnnie LeMaster Field.
 
Bears 12, Bulldogs 2, 7 innings: Third baseman Mason Melton had four hits and four RBIs while shortstop Frances Subero reached base five times as the Bears won the opener.
 
Melton had an RBI single in the seventh inning to push the game to the run rule.
 
Catcher Garren Gledhill had a hit and drove in two, while first baseman Joe Gagnon had a hit, an RBI and scored twice. Designated hitter Easton Mould had a hit, an RBI and scored a run.
 
Subero scored three times and right fielder Riley Paulino scored twice without the benefit of a hit.
 
Kameron Brodeur improved to 3-0 by throwing the first six innings. He struck out four and walked two, scattering seven hits.
 
Isaac Berry threw the seventh.
 
Bears 9, Bulldogs 5: Union took a 2-0 lead after two innings, but the Bears tied it in the bottom of the inning. They scored the two winning runs in the fifth and then put the game away with five in the sixth for the win.
 
Paulino and Gagnon had two hits each for the Bears, who finished with 10 in the day. Paulino scored a run and drove one win, while Gagnon had two RBIs and a run scored.
 
Centerfielder Dominic DeCarlo and Gledhill had a hit and drove in two each. Left fielder Noah Brooks doubled, drove in two and scored. Subero had a hit and scored twice, Melton had a hit and scored and pinch hitter Reed Sutton had a hit.
 
Dawson Schultz (1-1) pitched three innings of relief to get the win. He allowed one hit and struck out one.
