Softball wins pair at NMB

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The University of Pikeville ran its winning streak to six with a pair of wins on Tuesday morning.
 
The Bears knocked off Rochester Christian (Mich.) 7-5 and then blanked New Jersey City 9-0.
 
UPike is now 9-5 on the season. It wraps up play in North Myrtle Beach with two games on Wednesday. The Bears open the day at 9 a.m. when it faces Penn State DuBois. It returns at 1 p.m. to face Pfeiffer (N.C.) University.
 
Bears 7, Warriors 5: The Bears posted six runs in the third inning and made it stand up for the win.
 
Second baseman Kaden Dunlap drove in two, doubled and scored. Center fielder Addison Johnson and right fielder Maddie Horn had two hits each for the Bears. First baseman Claudia Maness, catcher Dani Crum and third baseman Ashlyn Dixon all singled and drove in a run. Kasey Lois singled, drove in a run and scored twice.
 
Shortstop Alexis Emery singled and Cate Salyers scored a run.
 
Chloe Bryant (3-2) came on in relief and pitched the final 3-2/3 innings for the win. She fanned four and allowed only two hits in relief of Brianna Johnsen, who threw 3-1/3.
 
Bears 9, Gothic Knights 0, 5 innings: UPike scored in all four trips to the plate and posted multiple runs in the last three innings to post the win.
 
Starting pitcher Shelby Ulrich allowed only one hit to post the shutout. She improved to 2-0 on the season.
 
Center fielder Addison Johnson had a big game, driving in four on two hits with a run scored. Left fielder Chloy Creech had a pair of hits, scored a run and drove on in.
 
Crum and shortstop Olivia Metcalfe had a triple, an RBI and a run scored each. Horn had a hit, Maness had a hit and scored a run and Dunlap and Ashlyn Dixon each had a single and scored twice.
 
Lois drove in a run.
