Riley Paulino had five hits, including three for extra bases, as the University of Pikeville split a doubleheader with Spartanburg Methodist (S.C.) College at Johnnie LeMaster Field on Friday.

The Pioneers rallied for a 5-1 win in the opener before the Bears took the nightcap 7-5.

UPike (11-5, 5-3 in the AAC) will host the Pioneers for a single game on Saturday to wrap up the series. The first pitch is slated for noon.

Spartanburg Methodist is now 8-11 overall, 2-6 in the league.

Pioneers 5, Bears 1: UPike jumped on top 1-0 in the third inning when right fielder
Riley Paulino hit a home run over the fence in right, but the Pioneers posted four in the sixth and added an insurance run in the ninth for the win.

Paulino's homer was his third of the season. He had both extra-base hits, adding a triple.
The only other hit was a single by designated hitter
Garren Gledhill.

Teague Van Dyke pitched the first five innings. He allowed no hits and struck out four.

Dawson Schultz (1-2) pitched the final four frames, allowing only one earned run.

Bears 7, Pioneers 5: The Bears scored five times in the bottom of the first and never looked back.

Paulino had three more hits, including his second triple of the day, and scored two times.

Mason Melton had two hits each, scored once each and drove in a pair apiece. Gagnon had a double among his hits.

Noah Brooks and designated hitter
Reed Sutton each had two hits, and Sutton added an RBI. Mould had a hit and an RBI while Gledhill had a hit.

Shaye McTavish (2-0) pitched the first five innings to earn the win. He struck out six.
Cole Carmichael pitched a scoreless sixth, while Richter Castillo threw the seventh for his first save of the season.
