Bears drop heartbreaker to SMC

A squeeze play in the top of the ninth inning gave Spartanburg Methodist (S.C.) College a 7-6 win over the University of Pikeville on Saturday.

The win also gave the Pioneers the win in the series, taking two of three.

The Bears scored three times in the second and added two more in the third for a 5-1 lead. But the Pioneers scored one in the fourth and posted four runs in the fifth to take a 6-5 lead.

The Bears tied it in the bottom of the sixth before the Pioneers pulled it out in the ninth.

UPike (11-6 overall, 5-4 in the AAC) managed a base-runner in the bottom of the ninth when first baseman Joe Gagnon was hit by a pitch, but his pinch runner, Matthew Crum, was stranded there.

Right fielder Riley Paulino, who had seven hits in the series and five for extra bases, scored twice with a double and a triple. Third baseman Mason Melton had a single and drove in two while also scoring a run.

Designated hitter Garren Gledhill had two hits including a double, with an RBI and a run scored. Gagnon had a hit and scored while catcher Tyler Brook and shortstop Frances Subero had a hit and an RBI each.

Left fielder Noah Brooks scored a run while second baseman Easton Mould drove one in.

UPike used three pitchers in the game, allowing only two earned runs while striking out seven.

The Bears will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon, hosting Lindsey Wilson University for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
