Bears, Brenau split doubleheader

The University of Pikeville and Brenau University each got a win on Saturday as the teams played a doubleheader at Paul Butcher Field on Senior Day for UPike softball.

UPike won the opener 3-2, while the Golden Tigers took the nightcap 6-2.

Between games of the doubleheader, seniors Chloe Bryant, Cassie Finley and Brianna Johnsen were honored for their contributions to the softball program.

The Bears are now 22-12 on the season and 12-10 in the AAC. Brenau now stands 24-13 overall, 15-6 in the league.

UPike will be on the road Tuesday, visiting Montreat College for another AAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Bears 3, Golden Tigers 2: Brenau took a 2-1 in the top of the sixth inning, but a Bears' rally in the bottom half began with a walk of catcher Dani Crum. One out later, second baseman Kaden Dunlap doubled to left-center field, putting two in scoring position.

Left fielder Harlee Quick was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and designated player Rylee Carter tied the game with a sacrifice fly to score Crum. Dunlap scored the eventual winning run on an infield groundout off the bat of centerfielder Chloy Creech.

UPike's first run came when first baseman Claudia Maness walked and scored on a ground out by Crum.

Creech had two hits for the Bears to go with her RBI. Dunlap doubled and right fielder Maddie Horn singled.

Chloe Calton (3-4) got the win in relief of Bryant. Calton pitched 1-2/3 and struck out two. Bryant pitched the first 5-1/3, striking out three and allowing only three hits.

Golden Tigers 6, Bears 2: Brenau scored in four of its seven trips to the plate to earn the split.

Dunlap had three hits for the Bears and drove in a run. The other run came off a groundout by Quick.

Dixon had a hit and scored both runs for the Bears. Carter and shortstop Alexis Emery both had doubles, while Crum, Creech and Horn all had singles.
