Bears sweep Bluefield on Senior Day

The University of Pikeville closed out the regular season on Friday with a sweep of Bluefield (Va.) University. The Bears won by scores 16-0 and 4-2.

They finished the regular season with a record of 28-17, 15-12 in the AAC. Bluefield finished 10-35 overall, 1-25 in the conference.

This was the second sweep of an AAC series this season for the Bears and gave them wins in five of the nine this season.

UPike will find out this weekend where they'll be seeded and when they'll play in next week's conference tournament, which will be at Hunter Wright Stadium in Kingsport, Tenn.

Bears 16, Rams 0, 7 innings: UPike led 1-0 before scoring 15 times in the fifth inning to pull away.

The 16-run performance matched the season high set on April 14 in a 16-0 win over Alice Lloyd.

The Bears got serious production from the bottom of the order, as the bottom third of the lineup had five hits, scored four and drove in six. Frances Subero had two hits, including a double, driving in three and scoring a run, while Cole Fowler had a homer and a single, recording three RBIs and scoring twice.

Three other Bears enjoyed multiple-hit games, as Mason Melton had two hits, drove in three and scored twice, while Garren Gledhill had a pair of hits and an RBI. Noah Brooks hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season as part of his two-hit, two RBI and three-run game.

Easton Mould had a hit, drove in two and scored; Riley Paulino had a hit and scored twice; Connor Moody had a hit and scored twice, and; Matthew Crum hit a deep double and scored a run.

The benefactor of the offense was Kameron Brodeur, who went 5-1/3 innings, allowing four hits and striking out three to improve to 5-2. Dawson Schultz recorded the final five outs with a strikeout.

Bears 4, Rams 2: Much like Thursday's opener, the Bears fell behind before rallying for the win in the finale.

They took the lead on a two-run single in the fifth off the bat of Melton, which scored Brooks and Paulino.

Mould and Gagnon had two hits each of the nine for the Bears in the win. Paulino had a hit, an RBI and a run scored. Fowler, Subero and Hayden Hollingsworth. Subero and Moody scored runs for the Bears.

Jake Maniago pitched 2/3 of an inning in relieve of starter Shaye McTavish and picked up the win, improving to 3-0. Jack Schroeder pitched the final two innings to pick up his first save.
