The University of Pikeville volleyball team got the school's athletics season started on Tuesday night with a 3-2 win over the visiting University of Rio Grande at the newly renovated UPike Gym.
 
The Bears took the match by scores of 25-22, 17-25, 24-26, 25-20, 15-7.
 
Senior Lanie Hawley led the Bears with 13 kills and junior Cassidy Rivas had 12 kills for the Bears. Senior Allyah Tokelau followed with nine, while junior Olivia Chapman added seven.
 
Senior Chloie Brinton had four  of UPike's nine service aces to go with 41 assists, followed by three service aces for Hawley.
 
Defensively, the Bears had seven solo blocks and 12 block assists. Again it was Hawley leading the way with three of each, while Chapman and sophomore Jlynn Risner had two solo blocks and three block assists.
 
Senior libero Lillian Carpenter led UPike with 15 digs. Brinton had 14 while Rivas finished with 13.
 
UPike will be back in action on Tuesday, Aug. 25 when it visits Lindsey Wilson University in Columbia. First serve is set for 7 p.m. EST.
 
Bears 25, Red Storm 22: A tight first set went the way of the Bears. Neither team scored more than four points in a row, and the biggest lead of the set was matched on the scoreboard in the end. UPike had 11 kills in the opener, with Rivas leading the way with three. Brinton had all nine assists, and Jlynn Risner had both solo blocks for the Bears. Sophomore Taylor Bartrum had three kills to pace Rio.
 
Red Storm 25, Bears 17: After an extremely close first set, Rio Grande scored the first nine points thanks to three kills and three service aces. The first two points the Bears scored were on Red Storm service errors. The lead grew to as many as 14 (21-7) before the Bears reeled off seven straight to get the lead in half. UPike got as close as six before the Red Storm closed it out.
 
Red Storm 26, Bears 24: After UPike took a 22-20 lead, Rio Grande scored six of the final eight points to win the third set. UPike tied the game at 23 when senior Allyah Tokelau had a kill off a Brinton pass. After Rio took a one-point lead, Hawley extended the game with a kill of her own. But Rio recorded kills by senior Kelli Stewart and freshman Claire Newman to pick up the win.
 
Bears 25, Red Storm 20: UPike had a 9-0 run, with of them with Brinton serving, to pull away for the win and force the fifth set. Rio led 14-11 when UPike scored on a block by Brinton and Hawley, moving the setter into the serve position. She had two service aces and the Bears got two kills each by Rivas and Tokelau, and a blast by Hawley pushed the Bears in front 20-14.
 
Bears 15, Red Storm 7: A 6-0 run, largely with Hawley on serve, gave the Bears a 9-2 lead. Hawley had two service aces in the run, while Rivas and Tokelau recorded kills. UPike led 13-7 and closed it out with a pair of Red Storm errors.
