Bears run streak to five, 4-0 in the AAC

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Senior Lanie Hawley continued her torrid pace with 14 kills to lead the University of Pikeville past Union Commonwealth University on Friday night.

Hawley had her kills on only 20 attacks, finishing the night with a .500 hitting percentage. In Tuesday's win over Bluefield, Hawley had 13 kills on 15 swings.

The win moved the Bears win streak to five in a row, improving to 11-3 overall and 4-0 in the AAC. All four conference wins have been sweeps.

Hawley had plenty of help. Senior Chloie Brinton, the nation's leader in assists, had 41 more in the win.

On the front line senior Allyah Tokelau was in double figures with 10 kills, while junior Cassidy Rivas fell just shy with nine.

Hawley led the Bears with three block assists, while Brinton had a solo and an assist. Freshman Baylee Moore led four players with double figure digs, finishing with 21. Brinton followed with 15, while Rivas had 12 and senior Lillian Carpenter 10.

UPike will have little time to rest; they head to Knoxville to play Johnson (Tenn.) University at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Bears 25, Bulldog 17: The teams were tied at seven of their first eight points before UPike ran off nine unanswered points to take control. With Brinton on serve, the trio of Rivas and Tokelau and junior Olivia Chapman recorded two kills each, with consecutive blasts from Rivas pushing the Bears in front 17-8. Union Commonwealth got no closer than five the rest of the set.

Bears 25, Bulldogs 11: The Bears broke a 4-4 tie and ran off 11 of the next 12 points to take control of the second set. UPike had six kills in the stretch; Hawley had three and JLynn Risner added two. Rivas had three kills in a 9-1 stretch to move the Bears to within one point of the win.

Bears 25, Bulldogs 21: Union hung around a little longer in the third set, as the teams were tied at 20. UPike then scored five of the final six points, getting a kill each from Chapman and freshman Sidney Johnson. It ended with a service ace by Carpenter.
