Evans named Defensive Player of the Week

CORBIN, Ky. – A linebacker from the University of Pikeville has been named the defensive player of the week by the AAC.

Levi Evans, a product of Dobyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport, Tenn., was honored after a vote of the league's sports information directors.

The Bears have now had a winner in all three player of the week categories through two weeks of the season. Last week, quarterback Alex Hatton won the offensive honor while kicker Isaac Smith was named special teams player of the week.

Evans is a 6-2, 237-pound junior who had 12 tackles on Saturday against Campbellsville University. Nine of his tackles were solos.

Additionally, he had 1.5 tackles for loss and, in the fourth quarter, blocked a field goal for the Bears.

It's the first time in his career Evans has been named defensive player of the week by the AAC in his career, but not his first time being honored. Last season, he was named special teams player of the week after blocking two punts in a 51-42 win over Kentucky Christian University.

Through two games this season, Evans has 18 tackles, 13 of them solos. He has three tackles for loss, one-half sack and a pass breakup.

Evans' total of 13 solo tackles leads the AAC. He's currently second in the league with his 18 total tackles while his 9.0 tackles per game is fourth in the conference.

Evans and the Bears will be back in action on Saturday when they host Andrew (Ga.) College at the W.C. Hambley Athletics Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
