Women's soccer suffers double-overtime setback

PIKEVILLE, Ky. –The University of Pikeville women's soccer team suffered its first loss Saturday, playing to a 3-2 defeat in the second overtime at the hands of visiting University of Rio Grande.

The Bears will now take a 3-1-1 record into their next game Tuesday, when they will play host to Kentucky Christian University.

After a slow start by both teams, Rio Grande put themselves on the board first with a 23rd minute goal by Alexandria Davis. They would not keep the lead for long, as UPike freshman Kayla Scott continued her hot streak with a goal in the 36th minute.

Scott's goal, her seventh of the season, was swiftly followed by a top-shelf goal from freshman Olivia Gipson in the 38th minute to give the Bears a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.

Rio Grande came out firing in the second half, wasting little time as Davis scored her second goal for the equalizer in the 52nd minute.

Neither team was able to score for the remainder of regulation, sending the game into ten minutes of extra time.

In the first extra period, little was accomplished to affect the outcome, but the Bears had an injury scare in the 96th minute when Scott was down for several moments after play became more and more physical.

The second extra time saw the breaking of the stalemate, with Rio Grande's Venessa Montgomery breaking the tie in the 110th and final minute on a free kick.

UPike freshman goalkeeper Chelsea Schulte had 14 saves in the losing effort, but the Bears generated only nine shots on goal in 110 minutes of play.
