Lineup shakeup leads Bears past Rio Grande

Box Score PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Five University of Pikeville Bears scored double figures and one turned in a double-double in an 84-79 win over the University of Rio Grande Saturday afternoon.
                   
Due to a change in the lineup, Pikeville got 71 of its points off the bench, including all five double-digit scorers. The Bears have now won three times in their last four games.
 
The game was tight throughout, with eight ties and a lead that was never more than seven points.
 
Rio (2-6, 0-5 in the Mid-South Conference) held a 38-37 lead at the half, but the Bears shot a robust 60.9 percent from the floor in the second half while Rio Grande sank only 43.8 percent. As a result, the Bears outscored the Red Storm 47-41 after the break to pull away for the win.
 
Pikeville (3-5, 2-3) was led by freshman Peyton Wright, who had 16 points and 10 rebounds. She also blocked three shots in the win. Junior Callisha Johnson also tossed in 16 while handing out three assists.
 
Junior Brogan Conley and sophomore Whitney Belle Jackson scored 11 each while junior Jayme Jacksosn added 10 and led the team with four assists.
 
Rio Grande, which made its only three-point shot in 18 tries with 38.6 seconds to play, got a game-high 28 points from junior Kate Hammond. The Greenville, Ohio, product also led her team with eight rebounds.
 
Freshman Sarah Bonar finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, while senior Shardai Morrison-Fountain added 11.
 
Pikeville will be back in action on Friday night when it hosts Morris College. The game, which will tip off at 7 p.m., will be played at the UPIKE Gym.
