Box Score PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Five of the nine Cavaliers who saw action reached double figures as the U.Va.-Wise knocked off the University of Pikeville 78-73 Saturday afternoon in the regular-season finale for both teams.
Wise, 8-20, 3-13 in the Mid-South Conference, will now open the 2012 Mid-South Conference tournament at home on Monday. Ironically, the team they played Saturday will be the opponent. Pikeville will visit the U.Va.-Wise Convocation Center for a noon tipoff.
The winner will advance to the quarterfinals of the MSC tournament, where it will meet top-seeded Cumberlands at 2 p.m. on Thursday afternoon in the Frankfort Convention Center.
After shooting a cool 44 percent in the first half, the Cavs blistered the nets for 58.1 percent after halftime. They also sank 80 percent from the free throw line after the half.
Pikeville, meanwhile, forced 23 Cav turnovers and hit 42.9 percent from the arc, but was only 41.2 percent overall from the floor.
Junior Chelsea Cluesman led all scorers with 18 points and had nine rebounds. Senior Chelsea McNamee had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Senior Kristin Mullins scored 13 points, followed by senior Amber Carter with 12 and senior Ayla Young with 11.
Carter added six assists and four steals to lead all players in both columns.
