Bears’ season ends as Wise advances in MSC

Box Score WISE, Va. – Eighth-seeded U.Va.-Wise hit 56.3 percent of its shots in the first half and knocked off No. 9 Pikeville 83-47 in the opening round of the 2012 Mid-South Conference tournament Monday afternoon in the U.Va.-Wise Convocation Center.
 
The Cavaliers will advance to play top-seeded Cumberlands in the quarterfinals of the tournament on Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Frankfort Convention Center.
 
Wise (9-20) scored the game's first 13 points and never looked back. Senior Kristin Mullins had a double-double by halftime, scoring 23 and pulling down 10 rebounds as the Cavs took a 47-18 lead into the locker room.
 
Pikeville (4-27) struggled from the field all day and had hit only 5-of-39 (12.8 percent) at halftime.
 
Mullins led all scorers with 31 points and pulled down 18 rebounds.
 
Teammates Chelsea Cluesman with 13 and Christine Nyobe with 11 were also in double figures. Nyobe, a native of Cameroon, had 12 rebounds with half of them coming off the offensive glass.
 
Freshman Kayla Smith led the Bears with 12 points, all coming in the second half. Sophomore Brogan conley and freshman Christin Haney added nine apiece.
 
The youthful Bears got 27 of their 47 points from their freshman class.
 
The Bears had nine steals en route to forcing 20 Cavalier turnovers, but couldn't take advantage on the offensive end of the floor. They finished hitting a season-low 21.6 percent from the field.
