No. 11 Shawnee State uses 2nd half to beat Bears

Box Score PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – The University of Pikeville let a three-point game get away from it in the second half in falling to No. 11 Shawnee State University 85-64 Saturday afternoon.
 
Pikeville (4-21) battled Shawnee State to a 35-32 score at the half, sinking 48 percent of its shots and nailing 4-of-5 three-point shots.
 
Freshman guard Sydni Wainscott, a native of Erlanger, led the way for the Bears. She had 15 of her game-high 22 before halftime and added five assists on the seven field goals made by her teammates.
 
But a 10-minute stretch of the second half saw the home team go on a 37-11 run to put the game out of reach.
 
Shawnee State (20-4, 10-2 in the Mid-South Conference) hit 53.3 percent in the second half and 58.3 percent from the arc to pull away for the win.
 
Wainscott, who added seven assists and five rebounds, was joined in double figures by freshman Whitney Belle Jackson, who scored 10 in 21 minutes of action. Junior Lanae Shouse-Stacy led the team to with to a 30-26 advantage on the glass with seven rebounds.
 
Reining player of the week Abby Ballman led the way for Shawnee State with 20 points and seven assists. She was 6-of-10 from the floor, all coming on three-point tries.
 
Four teammates joined her in double figures. Schera Sampson followed with 16 points and a team-best seven rebounds. Alannah Sheets added 13 and five assists, Catrice Mitchell came off the bench for 12 and Alex Pohl tossed in 10.
 
Pikeville will remain on the road when action resumes on Thursday, visiting No. 22 Campbellsville. Shawnee State will enjoy a week off before entertaining Georgetown College on Saturday.
