COLUMBIA, Ky. – The University of Pikeville volleyball team's four-match winning streak came to an end, losing at No. 11 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) 3-0 on Friday in Mid-South Conference play at Biggers Sports Center.
The Blue Raider offense was relentless, hitting 47 of 78 on attack attempts with just six errors for a .526 hitting percentage for the match. Kailey Moorhead led all players with 17 kills on 25 swings for a .680 mark.
UPIKE (13-12, 2-8 MSC) got a team-high seven kills from
Sydney Hall, while
Haley Esquivel and
Rachel Murphy added three each.
Sydney Morris finished with 14 assists, four digs and a block and
Dominique Melvin collected a team-best 10 digs.
The Bears were never able to get in a groove with the ball on their side of the net. They hit an even .000 in the first set and -.032 in the second, before finishing out with their best set of 12 points in the third with a .115 hitting percentage.
Hall had UPIKE's only service ace and added one block, along with Morris,
Chelsea Staples and
Audri Ray. Lindsey Wilson's Emily Meeks led the match in blocks with six, while Alexa Just had 38 assists and Kellie Ranney came up with 13 digs.
The Blue Raiders (23-1, 11-0 MSC) won both the first and second sets 25-9. After three Lindsey Wilson errors, the first set was tied 3-3 before it went on a 7-0 run to make it 10-3 on Moorhead's kill. A 9-2 run followed to make it 19-5 after an ace by Jesse Collins as UPIKE managed to score just four more points in the set.
UPIKE never led in the second frame as Lindsey Wilson broke out to a 19-5 lead after 10 straight serves from Kala Meservey who finished with three aces. Pikeville did score four of the next five points for its best run of the match, bringing the score to 20-9 but gave up the next five points to the Blue Raiders.
After scoring the first seven points of the third set, Lindsey Wilson built its largest lead of 14 points at 19-5 on a kill from Nadelina Nesheva. UPIKE outscored the Blue Raiders from there 7-6 to take a 25-12 loss to end the match.
The Bears are back in action at 2 p.m. ET on Saturday at Campbellsville (Ky.).
