Men’s Soccer Shuts Out Warren Wilson 4-0

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville men's soccer team snapped a four-game losing streak on Tuesday, topping Warren Wilson (N.C.) in shutout fashion 4-0 at the Bob Amos Soccer Complex.

It took just under 15 minutes for the Bears to strike first as Mateus Meira sent a cross into the box to Dean Johnson who one-timed the ball into the back of the net.

The goal came after multiple missed chances on corner kicks, including three straight from Johnson in one minute. UPIKE (4-7) had displayed solid ball control in the backfield, but fell victim to a pair of offside calls prior to the goal.  

A ball bounced past the Owl (1-10) keeper in the 27th minute and was gathered by Cooper Gaypia who flicked it toward the undefended goal, but hit the barely hit the post to knock it off track. A minute later the Bears sent a shot into the crossbar to keep the lead at one goal.

After the break Gaypia finally got his goal, dribbling through the left side of the box before bending a shot near the left post to make it 2-0 in favor of UPIKE in the 56th minute.

Three minutes later, Colin Conaway rebounded a miss by Gaypia just a few feet off the line to score the game's third goal. UPIKE wouldn't score again until the 78th minute as Johnson issued an assist to Rodrigo Galdamez on the top, right side of the box.

UPIKE outshot the Owls 19-6, including an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal. Cooper Gaypia led the game with nine shots and Dean Johnson added three.

The Bears also had more corner-kick chances at 8-4 and fouls 12-9. Bear goalkeeper Diego Rivas finished with two saves on his way to the clean sheet, while Owl keeper Pat Albright collected four saves with the four goals against.

UPIKE returns to the field at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday at Campbellsville (Ky.).
