LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Louisville, ranked fifth in the Associated Press Top-25, had eight players reach double figures in a 127-40 exhibition win over the University of Pikeville women's basketball team on Tuesday afternoon at the KFC Yum! Center.
Brittany Swindall led Pikeville with nine points and seven rebounds, while
Jayme Jackson and
Brogan Conley chipped in with six points each. Conley and Jackson both finished 2-of-5 on threes.
Asia Taylor paced Louisville with 19 points and Shawnta' Dyer finished with 14. Taylor also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Cardinals were a lesson on efficiency, dishing out 33 assists with just eight turnovers while shooting 59.1 percent from the field and hitting half of its 3-point attempts (9-of-19). UPIKE gave the ball up 33 times to trail 51-0 in points off turnovers.
Less than two minutes into the game, Louisville has built an 8-0 lead, utilizing back-to-back jumpers from Schimmel. The lead swelled to 26 points before
Christin Haney broke an 0-for-6 drought with a three.
Swindall added a pair of baskets in the paint and
Callisha Johnson broke through the Louisville defense for a layup to make it a 43-9 game with seven minutes left in the first half.
Shooting lights out from the floor, the Cardinals went on a 14-0 run, capped off by a Jude Schimmel three. Louisville was 6-of-10 from behind the arc at that point.
UPIKE rebounded well in the first 20 minutes, getting five each from Swindall and
Kandice Porter to trail the Cardinals just 20-19 on the boards. The Bears just had no answer for Louisville's big bodies down low, being outscored 28-4 in the paint.
The Cardinals finished the game with a 54-26 advantage on the glass, including a 21-10 edge in offensive rebounds.
At the break, UPIKE was shooting just 26.7 percent from the field and 16.7 percent (1-for-6) on threes.
The second half opened with a 21-7 run by the Cardinals as they continued to shoot over 60 percent from the field and turn the Bears over. Swindall and Jackson gave UPIKE a boost with back-to-back threes as Louisville moved to a zone defense.
Pikeville used the switch to score 12 more points in the second half than it did in the first, hitting 6-of-18 attempts from deep for 33.3 percent.
The Bears return to action with regular-season play at 7:30 p.m. ET on Nov. 12 at Alice Lloyd (Ky.).
