PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville volleyball team stepped outside of Mid-South Conference play on Wednesday and
Sydney Hall emerged in a big way, leading the Bears past Alice Lloyd (Ky.) 3-0 with 11 kills and a pair of solo blocks at UPIKE Gym.
Hall went 11 of 15 on the attack for a .600 hitting percentage as the Bears put together a .320 hitting mark for the match while the Eagles hit -.170.
While Hall was the only player to reach double figures in kills,
Taylor Watkins added eight kills off the bench and
Haley Esquivel added five. Using two setters, UPIKE was led by
Courtney Hodge with 16 assists, while
Sydney Morris added 15.
Dominique Melvin finished with a match-best eight digs and posted three service aces and an assist.
Audri Ray matched Hall on defense with two blocks.
Alice Lloyd tallied just eight kills for the match, compared to 38 for the Bears. The second set was exceptionally tough for the Eagles, finishing 0-for-14 with six errors on the attack.
UPIKE (9-8) had its best set hitting in the third, posting a .476 percentage, compared to .194 in the first as it came out slow at home.
Alice Lloyd (1-13) jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the first set on a kill by Katie McFarland and saw itself tied 11-11 nearly halfway through the frame on an attack error from Hall. UPIKE needed a 10-1 run to begin to dominate the set with a 21-12 lead before taking the set 25-14 on a kill by Watkins.
UPIKE scored eight of the first 10 points in the second set to make it an easy path for another set win. The Bears rallied to their largest lead at 17 points on set point with an ace by Melvin to go up 2-0 with a 25-8 win.
The third set was all UPIKE early, shooting out to a 21-5 lead before Alice Lloyd went on a 7-1 run to make it 22-12. The Eagles wouldn't score again as a service error,
Haley Johnson kill and error by Sarah Huber made it a 25-12 win for UPIKE, sealing the 3-0 shutout.
McFarland led Alice Lloyd with three kills and Sadie Slone handed out six assists, while McFarland also paced the defense with six digs.
Pikeville is back in action at 7 p.m. ET on Friday against Campbellsville (Ky.) at UPIKE Gym.
