Women’s Soccer Loses Lead, Edged by Cumberlands 2-1

Box Score
PIKEVILLE, Ky. – After a scoreless first half, Olivia Gipson put the University of Pikeville women's soccer team on top with a 55th-minute goal, but Cumberlands (Ky.) answered with two of its own in the next 12 minutes to claim a 2-1 Mid-South Conference win on Saturday at the Bob Amos Soccer Complex.

The win is the first of the season for the Patriots, improving to 1-7 overall and 1-2 in MSC games, while Pikeville drops to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Next up for UPIKE is a trip to Rio Grande, Ohio at 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

Cumberlands took just five shots in the game, but made them efficient strikes with four on goal, leading to the two second half scores to win the match. Michelle Bailey struck first in the 60th, tying the game off a cross into the box from Dakota Gadd.

Seven minutes later, Gadd collected a pass 15 yards behind the center of the box and sent a high, arching kick over the outstretched hands of Bear keeper Chelsea Schulte for what would be the winning goal.

UPIKE would get off three more shots on goal the rest of the half, but all three were collected by keeper Autumn Williams to preserve the one-goal advantage.

Apart from the two late goals, the Bears dominated the game offensively, leading in shots 17-5 and shots on frame 11-4. Cumberlands did finish with one more corner kick at 2-1, while both teams committed 10 fouls.

Schulte finished with just two saves, while Williams was forced to make 10 off of UPIKE's 17 attempts.

Pikeville's Makayla Mendoza led all players with five shots. Bailey and Gadd scored their goals for Cumberlands on their only shot attempts of the match.
