RIO GRANDE, Ohio – The University of Pikeville volleyball team made 19 errors with just 13 kills to hit -.059 in a 3-0 (25-20, 25-10, 25-14) loss at Rio Grande (Ohio) on Monday night at Newt Oliver Arena.
The RedStorm, on the other hand, fought off a slow start before going on to hit .327 the rest of the match, led by Autumn Snider (12), Betsy Schramm (11) and Alex Phillips (10) all finishing with double-digit kills.
Snider was impressive, committing just three errors all night to post a .500 hitting percentage while also pushing back five block assists.
Four kills from
Haley Esquivel led the Bears, followed by Syndey Hall and
Rachel Murphy finishing with three each.
Sydney Morris dished out nine assists,
Dominique Melvin had 11 digs and Hall finished with five blocks to lead UPIKE.
The Bears couldn't tally an ace on serve all night, compared to Rio Grande tallying eight to keep UPIKE (9-10, 1-6 MSC) off balance. Kayla Briley orchestrated the RedStorm attack with 37 assists and Nicole Ogg found 13 digs.
Pikeville posted a negative hitting percentage in the first two sets before finally pushing over into the positive side with a .075 mark in the third (7-40, 4 errors).
While Rio Grande (5-9, 1-7 MSC) hit just .143 in the opening frame, it picked up the pace with sets of .484 and .368 to close the match.
UPIKE is back in action at 6 p.m. ET on Thursday at Shawnee State in Portsmouth, Ohio.
