Women’s Basketball Tops No. 8 Georgetown 77-73

Box Score

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Behind 23 points from Cheyenne Madden and 22 from Callisha Johnson, the University of Pikeville women's basketball team knocked off No. 8 Georgetown (Ky.) 77-73 on Saturday at the East Ky. Expo Center.

It's the second win over a ranked opponent this season for the Bears and the highest ranked team it's beaten since winning at Georgetown last season when it was No. 13 in the NAIA Coaches' Poll.

While the Bears weren't great, shooting 40 percent from the field, their defense was great, forcing 17 turnovers and limiting the Tigers to just 32.9 percent shooting. Pikeville was outrebounded 53-44 and hit one less three, leaving free throws as the pivotal difference, making five more shots that Georgetown.

Khalilah Quigley joined Madden and Johnson in double figures with 11 points and eight rebounds. Georgetown was led by Lizza Jonas with 22 points and Jessica Foster posted a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds.

After opening with a layup from Tyra, Georgetown grabbed a 6-2 lead to start the game, but Pikeville responded with a 6-0 run to gain the momentum. Porter was huge off the bench during the run, sinking a put-back and throwing a great outlet pass for a layup.

She was also the catalyst for a pressure UPIKE defense that kept turning the Tigers over enough to build a 10-point lead at 29-19 on a power move in the paint from Madden.

While holding the Tigers under 30-percent shooting in the half, the Bears led by as many as 18 points, taking a 45-27 lead into the locker room at the break. Pikeville shot 43 percent in the first 20 minutes, while also hitting 12-of-15 shots from the free-throw line.

The first three minutes of the second half continued to belong to Pikeville, building a 20-point lead at 47-27 on a basket from Conley. The good vibes came to an abrupt end however when Madden hit a shot to make the score 51-32.

UPIKE wouldn't score again for over four minutes as Georgetown used a 14-0 run to get right back in the game, cutting the Bears' lead to just four points at 52-48 on a pair of free throws from King.

There was a little bit of breathing room built by Pikeville with a 6-2 run to go back up by eight after Porter dished to Madden down low, but Georgetown seemed determined on sticking around, getting a three from Tyra to make the score 58-53 with eight minutes to go.

On cue, Johnson came up huge for the Bears with a 4-0 run to go back up by nine. She opened the mini burst with a fast-break layup and then hit two free throws. Tonge followed her up with a three from the corner and suddenly UPIKE was up 11 at 65-54.

The game was far from over as Georgetown used a 6-0 run to eventually get within two at 73-71 on a three from Howard with 1:26 on the clock. It was the third straight three for the Tigers.

Johnson hit two free throws for the Bears to go back up by four, followed by Kelah Eldridge going 1-for-2 at the stripe. King's basket to cut the deficit to three was the final points for Georgetown as Tyra missed two late 3-pointers before the final buzzer.

UPIKE is back in action at 7 p.m. ET on Monday, hosting No. 21 Cumberlands (Ky.) at the East Ky. Expo Center.
