PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season and it came at just the right time, topping Bluefield (Va.) 5-2 in the Mid-South Conference opener on Tuesday at Bob Amos Park.
With the Rams travelling with just four players, UPIKE picked up a default win at No. 5 singles to take a 1-0 lead before the start of the match. The Rams dropped to 1-6 on the season with the loss, while the Bears are 1-1.
In doubles action,
Mounia Sami and
Thais Bezerra teamed up at the No. 1 seed for UPIKE to beat Casey German and Rebecca Havens 8-5, while Pikeville's Kara Criswell and
Kennedy King were also 8-5 winners against Alison Morgan and Sierra Queen at No. 2 to take a 3-0 lead.
Sami won her second match of the day after taking down German at the top singles spot 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, while Bezerra closed out the wins for the Bears with a 6-1, 6-2 rout of Cravens at No. 2.
The Rams picked up their two wins with Queen topping Criswell 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 and fourth-seeded Morgan beating King 6-4, 6-4 as well.
Pikeville is back in action at 2 p.m. ET on Saturday against Cumberlands (Ky.) at Bob Amos Park.
