LEBANON, Tenn. – Second-seeded Georgetown (Ky.) shot 70.4 percent from the field in the second half, erasing an 11-point deficit, to beat the No. 6-seed University of Pikeville in the semifinals of the Mid-South Conference Women's Basketball Championship on Saturday.
Callisha Johnson poured in a game-high 28 points and
Cheyenne Madden tallied 16 points and six rebounds in the post, but it was not enough to overcome a 24-4 run by the Tigers in which UPIKE went without a field goal for seven minutes.
The Bears close out the 2013-14 season with a 14-18 overall record and 7-11 mark in MSC play.
After erasing the 11-point, second-half deficit, Georgetown went on to lead by as many as eight points. Pikeville made one final run toward the end of the contest, but ultimately couldn't get any close than four points as the shots started not to fall in the final two minutes.
Four Tigers (21-7) ended the game in double figures, as senior Kourtney Tyra led the way with 20. Lizza Jonas and Andrea Howard added 19 points each and sophomore Teonia McCune added 10 to go along with her game-changing four blocks.
It was Pikeville taking control throughout the latter part of the first half, building a nine-point lead heading into the break after closing the half on a 13-4 run in the final 4:50. The trio of Madden, Johnson and
Khalilah Quigley took over during the final stretch, netting 11 of the 13 points.
The Tigers cut the deficit to as few as five in the opening five minutes of the second half, but Johnson again found an answer with a triple from the right wing and
Kandice Porter connected on a jumper at the elbow to give Pikeville its largest lead of the game at 54-44 with 14:52 to play.
Trailing 57-46, McCune put Georgetown on her back over the next 2:20 to help the Tigers tie the game. Tyra began the run with an old-fashioned three-point play and Jonas followed with a layup. On the next three possessions, the Tigers found McCune underneath for easy layups which set the tone to prevent the upset.
UPIKE finished the game shooting 45.3 percent from the field, compared to 52.4 percent from the Tigers. Georgetown also outrebounded the Bears 35-33 and hit six more free throws. Pikeville held a slight advantage from behind the arc, hitting seven threes compared to five for the Tigers.
