PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – In the closest match the University of Pikeville women's tennis team has played this season, it was edged by a single point 5-4 on Tuesday at Shawnee State (Ohio) on the Dr. William E. Daehler Courts.
The day started off good for the Bears (1-8, 1-3 MSC) with two wins in doubles play as
Thais Bezerra and
Mounia Sami topped Brianna Boggs and Shelbie Wulfekamp 8-2 at the top seed and
Shae Criswell and
Michaela Hyden took care of Kyra Keeton and Karly Stites 8-6 at No. 2. The only match UPIKE gave up was a default loss at the third seed to enter singles up 2-1.
Success continued for Pikeville at the top of the order where Sami won 6-1, 6-0 against Keeton and Bezerra won by the same score against Wulfekamp at No. 2. Leading 4-1, UPIKE lost two straight points at the third and fourth seeds as Stites beat Hyden 7-5, 6-3 and Boggs got past Criswell 6-2, 6-4.
Shawnee State finished off its comeback and took the win by grabbing two default wins at the bottom seeds. SSU improved to 2-3 overall and 2-3 in the Mid-South Conference with the win.
