PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The 21st-ranked University of Pikeville men's tennis team continues to produce a season to remember as it topped Campbellsville (Ky.) 7-2 on Sunday in Mid-South Conference play at Bob Amos Park.
UPIKE improves to 11-5 overall and 4-1 in MSC play, while the Tigers, who are receiving votes in the NAIA coaches' poll, drop to 12-5 overall and an even 3-3 in league play.
The Bears took control of the match early with strong performances in the top two doubles spots.
Pawel Tarasewicz and
Dmitry Babenkov got things started with a hard-fought 9-7 win against Sebastian Marot and Zach Baulch at No. 2, while
Sven Rodenbusch and
Marcos Fondelius won 8-1 at No. 2 against Johan Fuzellier and Parker Jones.
Campbellsville got on the board with a 9-7 win from Alejandro Soriano and Noah Swencki over
Connor Smith and
Francois Billet at the third seed.
The Tigers would come up with just one more win on the day as Soriano beat Babenkov 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 2 seed in singles. Leading 4-2 later in the match,
Juan Manuel Reyes clinched the win for UPIKE with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Swencki at the sixth seed.
The closest win of the day for Pikeville came at the No. 4 seed where Fondelius outlasted Fuzellier 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.
UPIKE returns to the courts at 3 p.m. ET on Wednesday against Georgetown (Ky.) in the final home match of the season.
