Box Score 2 SEWANEE, Tenn. – Winning four straight matches in two days, the University of Pikeville volleyball team captured the Sewanee Invitational Championship on Saturday. The Bears topped the host Tigers 3-1 to start the day before taking down Oglethorpe 3-1 in the championship game.
Interestingly, the Bears (7-2) won all four of their matches at the invite by 3-1 scores. UPIKE won 12-25, 25-15, 25-21, 25-21 against Sewanee and 25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 26-24 against the Stormy Petrels.
Audri Ray paced the UPIKE attack in the opener with 12 kills, followed by
Chelsea Staples in double figures with 10. As a team, the Bears hit .179, compared to .102 for Sewanee.
Sydney Morris had 35 assists,
Caitlynn Pfaadt had 14 digs and Staples sent back five blocks in the win.
Against Oglethorpe, it was Staples stealing the show with a match-high 16 kills on 31 swings for a .323 mark. Ray and freshman
Connor Cook backed her up with eight kills each, while Morris dished out 37 assists, Pfaadt had 15 digs and Cook and Staples both had two blocks to quiet the Stormy Petrels.
The Bears step back onto the court at 6:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday, hosting Union at UPIKE Gym.
