LEBANON, Tenn. -- The University of Pikeville men's tennis team lost one singles match and one doubles decision, but the rest of the trip to Cumberland was smooth sailing on Saturday as it won 7-2 over the Bulldogs.
Andres Burgos and Jarrod Ritson got things started on a positive note for Cumberland with an 8-6 win over Dmitry Babenkov and Marcos Fondelius at No. 1 doubles, but Pawel Tarasewicz and Francois Billet evened things up with an 8-6 win of their own at No. 2 over Dylan Nelson and Jose Ortega Vela.
Cumberland played with just five players, giving the Bears a forfeit win at No. 3 doubles and a 2-1 lead in the match overall.
Other than Ritson winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles over Babenkov, the rest of the match went UPIKE's way, including Billet registering a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Burgos at the top seed.
Other UPIKE wins included Juan Manuel Reyes over Vela 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3, Fondelius topping Nelson 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 and Tarasewicz shutting out Madison Mummert 6-0, 6-0 at the fifth seed.
UPIKE is back in action at 2 p.m. ET on Wednesday at Bluefield (Va.).
