LEBANON, Tenn. -- Macarena Acuna from the University of Pikeville women's tennis team topped Cumberland's Angelica Sepulveda 7-5, 6-2 at the top singles position, but that was the lone win of the day for the Bears as the 19th-ranked Bulldogs won 8-1.
Sepulveda is the 16th-ranked singles player in the NAIA, but Acuna pulled off the upset on the road, winning in straight sets. But including three forfeits from UPIKE in singles and two in doubles, the nationally-ranked Bulldogs had more than enough firepower to grab the win.
In the lone doubles match of the day, Cumberland's Sepulveda and Tarsha de Souza beat Acuna and Thais Bezerra 8-3.
De Souza went on to win in singles over Marine Kennel 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 2 seed, while third-seeded Gisela Amor Garcia topped Bezerra 6-1, 6-1.
UPIKE is back on the courts at 2 p.m. ET on Wednesday at Bluefield (Va.).
