CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- University of Pikeville men's tennis coach Tim Alderman won his 50th match since helping bring tennis back to the school in 2012 as his Bears topped NCAA Div. II Charleston 6-3 on Friday.
UPIKE (2-1) won two of the three doubles matches, setting it up to seal the match with just three wins in singles play.
Those came in a hurry as the first three matches to finish all had UPIKE on the winning side. Sixth-seeded Juan Reyes won first, 6-3, 6-1 over Varun Shah, followed by Eric Bernabue topping Jamie Gibson 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 4 seed.
The clinching match came at the third seed where Fernando Fernandez won 6-1, 6-3 against Ivan Rajevac.
UPIKE cruised to an early advantage with an 8-2 win by Jan Kappes and Enzo Douillac at the No.1 doubles spot, followed by Bernabue and Diego Reboredo winning 8-6 at the No. 2 seed.
