PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- It didn't take long for the University of Pikeville women's tennis team to register its fourth win of the season, topping Shawnee State (Ohio) 8-1 in just over two hours on Thursday at the Bob Amos Comlex.
With the win, the Bears improve to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in Mid-South Conference play, while SSU drops to 0-2.
For UPIKE, four wins is the most for the program since 2004 when it finished the season with a 4-3 record.
All three doubles matches went in UPIKE's favor as 8-2 was the closest Shawnee State would come at the second seed where Thais Bezerra and Cailee Marcum topped Kendi Kistler and Caleigh O'Neil. The top-seeded match was won 8-0 and the No. 3-seed match was an 8-1 decision.
It was smooth sailing as well in the top five singles positions for UPIKE as the lone loss came at No. 6 where Bryanna Schroers lost 6-1, 6-3 to Mara McGee.
Other than that, SSU wasn't able to grab more than two wins in any set, including eight sets finishing at 6-0.
The domination started in style as top-seeded Macarena Acuna was the first player to finish, topping Molly Richards 6-0, 6-1. Second-seeded Mounia Sami and third-seeded Bezerra followed that up with a pair of shutout 6-0, 6-0 wins.
At the No. 4 seed Hailey Justice didn't notch a shutout, but still took care of business with a 6-0, 6-2 win over O'Neil. Fifth-seeded Marcum added another shutout for Pikeville, topping Kiersten McGraw 6-0, 6-0.
