PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- In back-to-back days the University of Pikeville men's tennis team has taken down two ranked opponents after outlasting No. 22 Cumberland (Tenn.) 6-3 on Monday at the Bob Amos Complex.
The win comes just a day after registering the first ranked win of the season over No. 17 Campbellsville.
UPIKE (10-2, 4-1 MSC) faced a 2-1 deficit after doubles play as only the third-seeded pair of Juan Reyes and Fernando Fernandez could get a win, beating Jakov Tshirkin and Jose Ortega Vela 8-6.
But in singles the Bears went to work, earning wins in the first three matches to finish to take a 4-2 lead.
Top-seeded Jan Kappes finished first, topping Anatoily Lashkul 6-3, 6-3, followed by No. 3-seed Pablo Cases winning against Alejandro Rosas by the same score. The third win came at the second seed where Enzo Douillac fought off Thiago Lopes 6-4, 7-5.
The Phoenix answered back with a win at No. 4 to get within one at 4-3 overall, but utilizing a second-set tiebreak, UPIKE's Juan Reyes collected the deciding fifth win with a 6-3, 7-6 (5) decision over Tshirkin at the fifth seed.
