GAME NOTES: UPIKE vs. Reinhardt
SCOUTING THE EAGLES: Since UPIKE (4-4, 2-2 MSC Appalachian) started playing No. 3 Reinhardt (6-0, 3-0 MSC Appalachian) in 2015, the Eagles have been one of the best teams in the NAIA. Last season, they won 12 straight games before eventually falling in the NAIA national semifinals. This year, RU hasn't not lost a step under first-year head coach James Miller, starting the season off 6-0. Twenty-three points is the closest a team has gotten to the Eagles in a 54-31 win at Faulkner, in the rest of the wins, they are beating teams by 41.3 points per game.
In five of their six games, the Eagles have scored 50 or more points, including a 56-6 domination of Union two weeks ago. Reinhardt ranks in the top 10 of 15 different statistical categories nationally, including first in total defense, allowiing 205.3 yards, and first in rushing offense, gaining 389.5 yards per contest. Aside from being the NAIA's top defensive team, the offense isn't bad either, ranking 13th nationally with 480.8 yards per game.
RUSH, THEY WILL: The Eagles have had 23 different players touch the ball in their non-stop rushing attack, led by Montralius Mosley and his 390 yards. Mosley is averaging over 10 yards every time he touches the ball and has reached the end zone six times. Qua Stocks also has six rushing scores, as he also is averaging 10.8 yards per carry and has 302 total yards. And when you aren't worried about those two, quarterback Dylan Wiggans is a threat to run every play, totalling 248 yards on 38 attempts, good for nearly seven yards per rush.
UPIKE IN THE NAIA: The Bears rank 27th nationally in points per game at 34.4 and have the 28th best rushing attack, gaining 188.9 yards per game. As an offense, UPIKE is 37th in the NAIA at 396.9 yards per game. However, the defense is 65th in the NAIA, allowing 421 yards a game and the Bears are the 13th most penalized team with 85.4 yards lost to penalties.
Romon Morris is fourth in total interceptions with five, Xondre Willis ranks 21st in rushing yards per contest at 102.1 and Taeron Brown is 25th in tackles per game at 8.9. Punter William Chandler's 38.6 yards per attempt are the 25th best mark in the NAIA.
THE SCHEDULE AHEAD: After today's homecoming game, the Bears will head south one more time to face Warner in Lake Wales, Fla., on Nov. 4, followed by senior day against Bluefield (Va.) on Nov. 11, which is the regular-season finale.
HOLLAND ONE WIN FROM RECORD: With his next win, UPIKE head coach Allan Holland Jr., will become the school's all-time wins leader with 23. He is currently tied for the record with Jerry Mynatt. Mynatt led the Bears to their only NAIA Playoff appearance in 2005, while Holland Jr., got the school its first conference championship last season.
