BEREA, Ky. -- Despite starting the match down 3-0 with default losses, the University of Pikeville women's tennis team nearly came back to beat Berea on the road before falling 5-4 on Sunday afternoon.
UPIKE won two doubles points with Macarena Acuna and Cailee Marcum topping Taylor Meyers and Trinity Goodman 8-4 at the top seed and Bryanna Schroers and Emma Wonn outlasting Alicia Bedolla and Erin Goodpaster 8-5 at No. 2.
Acuna tied the match at 3-3 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Meyers at the top singles spot, and then Schroers gave UPIKE a 4-3 lead with a 6-1, 7-6 (1) win against Ferrell.
But Berea won two tightly contested matches to seal the win as Goodman won against Marcum 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7) and Bedolla got past Wonn by a similar score of 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (12-10).
