PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – The University of Pikeville women's tennis team came within a tiebreaker of topping Shawnee State in its Mid-South Conference opener on Thursday.

With the match tied 4-4, UPIKE's Emma Wonn lost to Kathleen Singer 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3) as the pair played the final set to a 10-point tiebreak to decide the match.

Earlier the Bears had secured their first win at No. 1 doubles where Macarena Acuna and Caillee Marcum beat Kendi Congrove and Megan Meyers 8-0. Acuna continued the solid play in singles where she shut out Shelby Hay 6-0, 6-0 at the top seed.

UPIKE also tallied wins at No. 2 singles from Marcum and No. 3 singles from Bryanna Schroers before Wonn's deciding fourth-seed matchup. Marcum topped Congrove 6-0, 6-1, while Schroers outlasted Meyers 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7).

The Bears return to action at Noon ET on Saturday, hosting Charleston at the Bob Amos Complex.
