LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The sixth-seeded University of Pikeville men's tennis team lost 5-0 to No. 3-seed Cumberland (Tenn.) in the first round of the Mid-South Conference Championship on Sunday.
Originally scheduled to be played in Bowling Green, inclement weather forced league officials to scramble and secure Top Gun Academy in Louisville for the first-round matches. The rest of the tournament will return to Bowling Green on Monday.
UPIKE closes its season with a 7-9 record while the Phoenix improve to 7-5.
Cumberland grabbed a quick 3-0 lead with convincing wins in all three doubles matches. Only the top-seeded duo of Eric Bernabeu and Pedro Azevedo avoided being shut out, losing 8-2 to Axel Lucich and Thiago Lopes.
It only took three singles wins for the Phoenix to bring the match to an early close, leaving the rest of the matchups going unfinished.
Riccardo Ferraris won first, topping Kenton Hall 6-0, 6-0 at the fourth seed, followed by Ramon Puertolas posting the clinching win 6-1, 6-0 over Azevedo.
