BANNER ELK, N.C. -- The University of Pikeville women's tennis team went on the road and lost to NCAA Div. III Lees-McRae College 8-1 on Sunday.
The Bears fall to 1-1 on the season with the loss, while the Bobcats improve to 2-1.
Samantha Fraser stayed undefeated on the season for UPIKE with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Mackenzie Langmade at the No. 2 seed, but no other wins were in the cards for the Bears.
They came close in doubles as Cailee Marcum and Emma Wonn lost 8-6 to Emily Harrison and Dakota Tittle at the No. 3 seed and Fraser and Andrea Hurtado fell 8-5 Langmade and Sandra Allen at the top doubles spot.
"The final score didn't tell the full story," said UPIKE head coach Ben Adams. "The ladies gave everything and deuce was common in most games up and down the ladder. But we give credit to Lees-McRae, this was a good loss to a great team."
