OWENSBORO, Ky. – Despite having just five players available, the University of Pikeville women's tennis team was able to win comfortably at Kentucky Wesleyan, 6-3, on Saturday.
With the win, the Bears move to 2-1 on the season while the Panthers drop to 2-4.
UPIKE started off up 2-1 after doubles, only losing at the third seed where it had to forfeit, Samantha Fraser and Cailee Marcum won 8-2 over Jenna Payne and Amy Gossett at the top seed and Andrea Hurtado and Camila Agudelo handed Elizabeth Clayton and Mallory Damin 8-6 at No. 2.
Madison Daniels captured the clinching win in singles when she beat Clayton 0-6, 6-4, 10-5 at the second seed. After being blanked in the first set, she fought back to tie it up before deciding the match with a 10-point tiebreaker.
Fraser beat Payne in straight sets 7-5, 6-4, as did Hurtado over Damin 6-0, 6-1.
Marcum closed out the wins for the Bears as she topped Gossett in a single pro set with the match already decided.
The Panthers claimed their lone win at No. 5 singles where Liz Greer beat Agudelo 8-3.
