COLUMBUS, Ohio -- UPIKE women's tennis opened its season with a strong team win against Capital University on Saturday.
The Bears won five singles matches and two doubles to defeat the Crusaders 7-2.
The duo of Andrea Hurtado and Camila Agudelo won the No. 1 doubles match 8-1 to get UPIKE started on the right track. Capital answered with a win in the No. 3 doubles match, but then Charlie Nijenhuis and Riley Mullins took the No. 2 match, 8-6 to give UPIKE the lead heading into singles play.
From there, it was game over as UPIKE nearly swept the singles matches in straight sets, losing just the No. 6 match. For Nijenhuis, Mullins, and Ashton Jones, their singles wins marked the first of their college careers. No UPIKE player that won its match gave up more than three games in any set.
