Box Score 4 CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky.. -- After rain spoiled the Mid-South Conference opener for UPIKE tennis, Saturday's contest against Campbellsville became a dual match with Shawnee State and the Tigers, where each team walked away with a win and a loss.
Men
UPIKE men's tennis opened the day with a 7-2 team victory over Shawnee State. The only two matches the Bears lost were forfeits due to not having six competitors.
The duo of Martyn Icke and Luis Gayoso won the No. 1 doubles match while Eric Bernabeu and Juan Diego Medina won the No. 2 doubles match, both in 8-0 sweep fashion.
In singles, Pikeville won so convincingly that Shawnee couldn't draw more than three games in a single match against Pikeville's top four players. The only close match of the matchup was in the No. 5 matchup between UPIKE's Kenton Hall and Carter Nolte. Hall took the first set 3-6, but then dropped the second set 6-2. The tiebreaker rally went deep, but Hall took the victory with a 11-9 win in tiebreak.
UPIKE's second match of the day was a complete role reversal against No. 10 Campbellsville. The Tigers overpowered the Bears en route to a 8-1 loss for Pikeville.
Campbellsville won two doubles matches, but Bernabeu and Medina won their match 8-2. Eric Bernabeu was able to force a third set in his singles match, but ultimately fell 5-7, 6-2, 2-10. Medina also put up a good fight, but couldn't get over the hump in his match, losing 4-6, 5-7.
Women
UPIKE women's tennis faced similar fates as the men with a 7-2 win over Shawnee State and a 8-1 loss to Campbellsville.
The Bears won two of three doubles matches against Shawnee State. Andrea Hurtado and Charlie Nijenhuis won the No. 1 doubles match 8-4, while Camila Agudelo and Riley Mullins won the No. 2 doubles match 8-6.
Hurtado, Nijenhuis, Agudelo, Mullins and Ashton Jones all won their singles matches in straight sets to put Shawnee State aside convincingly.
Campbellsville provided a much greater challenge for the Bears and some matches were closer than an 8-1 final score indicates.
Pikeville got started on the right foot with a 9-7 upset by Hurtado and Nijenhuis in the No. 1 doubles match, but the Tigers would win the other two to hold the lead going into singles play.
Hurtado nearly pulled off a second upset, forcing a tiebreaker set against Brenda Aguilar in the No. 1 singles spot, but lost 3-6, 6-4, 2-6. Nijenhuis also put up a good fight in the No. 2 spot but lost the same way Medina did on the men's side, 4-6, 5-7.
