Pikeville, KY – UPIKE men's tennis notched conference win number four Wednesday evening, stifling Georgetown 6-1 at home. The win pushes the Bears to 5-3 on the season with a conference mark of 4-3.
Saturday saw the Bears suffer a tough loss to (14) University of the Cumberlands but Wednesday the squad returned energized and played a solid match on all fronts.
Number one doubles Juan Alzate and
Carlos Villamizar set the tone early, taking down Georgetown's top duo 6-3. The Bears' #2 team of Juan Medina and
Timur Chsherbakov played a close set but fell 6-4 before
Fernando Proano and
Luis Gayoso handled business in the #3 doubles 6-2, putting UPIKE up 1-0 heading into singles play.
The Bears secured victories in five of six doubles, taking their only loss in the #2 singles in a heated battle that went three sets. Chsherbakov kicked things off with a two-set win over Cole Wilson 6-4, 6-4 to improve his singles record to 4-3 on the season.
Villamizar picked up in the #3 singles, taking down Logan Smallwood 6-2, 6-2 before Medina followed with a two set win over Hunter Nosek. Gayoso handled Jackson Jacobi in the #5 6-3 and 7-5 before Proano capped the day with a 6-4, 6-2 victory in the #6 to seal the victory for the Bears.
