KINGSPORT, Tenn. – The University of Pikeville opened The Show with a 78-62 win over Langston (Okla.) University on Friday night at the MeadowView Marriott Convention Center & Conference Resort.

The win was the second in a row for the Bears and ran their record to 4-2 on the young season. It was also the first win ever over Langston. The Lions won the only previous meeting, an 80-71 decision in the 2015 NAIA Div. I women's basketball tournament. Langston was coached at that time by Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame member Cheryl Miller.

The loss was the first of the season for Langston after opening with four straight wins.

India Blyth and
Allie Stone put the bears in front 8-6 before the Lions went on the game's first run. Senior Skylarr Little began it with a three-point play, followed by a layin by junior Kamisha Moore.

A jumper by senior Hailey Jordan was followed by a layup for junior Jordynn Conner, pushing the Langston lead to 15-8 with 2:16 remaining in the opening period.

The Bears needed only a minute to respond. Graduate student
Bailey Frazier got it started with a three-point play. Stone splashed in a three before sophomore
Jaidy Mejia-Andrade scored on a putback with 53 seconds left to put UPike back on top 16-15.

A three-point play by Connor with 4:56 remaining in the half put Langston on top 27-26 before the Bears closed out the half in style. They ended the half on 19-4 run to take control.

Freshman
Rachel Bush was the key early, putting the Bears in front with a three-point play and then a putback to make the score 31-27 with 4:00 left.

A three-point play by Connor cut it to one before Stone scored inside, Bush nailed a three at the top.

A tie-up resulted in a foul and technical foul, with Bush hitting one of two before Stone nailed them both.

Frazier nailed a three from the corner with 1:04 left before Mattie Boyd split two free throws for the Lions. The half ended with another three-pointer by Stone.

The Bears had ended the half with a 19-4 run, with Bush scoring nine and Stone adding seven, and they went to the break on top 45-31.

After the electric run to end the first half, the Bears couldn't buy a bucket to start the second. In the first 7:43 of the period, they made only a single basket. But the Lions were struggling as well, and an 8-0 run only got them within five (47-42).

The Bears closed it out with the final six, but again made only one field goal, a layup by Stone. She hit two free throws with 14.9 seconds left to end the third quarter on top 54-42.

UPike took command in the fourth, pushing the lead to as many as 18, 68-50, when stone sank teo free throws with 3:55 left.

Stone matched her career high with 26 points for the Bears. The 5-6 guard also had seven rebounds in the win. Bush finished with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Frazier added 15 points and six rebounds.

The Bears also got nine rebounds from Mejia-Andrade and seven from senior
Morgan Stamper.

Langston was paced by 19 points and 10 rebounds from Jordan, who had six rebounds off the offensive glass.

UPike has tomorrow off and will wrap up play in The Show on Sunday afternoon, playing WVU Tech at 2:30 p.m. Â
