Pikeville, Ky. – The Bears extended their win streak to five after downing their rivals from up the Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway, the Georgetown College Tigers, 7-0 Thursday afternoon at Bob Amos.
Doubles:
Martin Lorenzo and Alfonso Robinson were defeated 6-3 by GC's Max Barriere and Chase Hechemy to open doubles play. UPIKE tied the doubles score after Juan Diego Alzate and Mirko Dedich teamed up for a 6-1 win over Parker Clarke and Tsugu Hirose.
The doubles point came down to Valentin Ortiz and Paulo Castillo for UPIKE and Stephen Taylor and Leo Schrimer for Georgetown. Ortiz and Castillo came through with a 6-2 win over Taylor and Schrimer, securing the doubles point for UPIKE.
Singles:
With UPIKE leading the team score 1-0, Valentin Ortiz faced off with GC Tiger Max Barriere. Ortiz won 6-3, 6-4, but it was a battle until the end. Juan Diego Alzate put UPIKE up 3-0 in the team score with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Leo Schirmer.
The next two singles matches were very close. The matchup of Alfonso Robinson and Parker Clarke went to three sets. After Robinson took the first set 7-5, Clarke responded 6-2 to tie it. With the score tied 1-1, Robinson ended it with a 6-1 win, giving UPIKE a 4-0 match lead. Paulo Castillo lost the first set 6-1 to Tsugu Hirose but clawed his way back to victory with 6-4 and 6-3 set wins.
Martin Lorenzo fell in his doubles match but got redemption with a dominant, 6-1, 6-2 win over Logan Smallwood. In the final singles match of the afternoon, Mirko Dedich capped off a 7-0 UPIKE victory over Georgetown with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Stephen Taylor.
Coach Brennan Alderman's squad improves to 8-3 (5-1 MSC) following today's victory over the Tigers. UPIKE will return to action Saturday for an MSC bout with the UT-Southern Firehawks in Pulaski, Tenn.
