Pikeville, Ky. – The Bears' win streak was snapped after a 4-3 loss to the Georgetown College Tigers Thursday evening at Bob Amos.
Doubles:
Hannah Thompson and Elizabeth Davis took on Bailee Martin and Samantha Spady in the first doubles match. After a back and forth battle, Martin and Spady put GC up 1-0 in the doubles with a 6-3 win. Gabriela Guacanes and Genesis Medina tied the doubles score with a 6-2 win over Lydia Prince and Emma Hill.
The final doubles match pitted UPIKE's Katharina Steib and Sara Contreras against Georgetown's Maddie Gill and Hana Dixon. Gill and Dixon secured the doubles team point for the Tigers after a 6-3 win over Steib and Contreras.
Singles:
Genesis Medina and Bailee Martin got the singles matches started with a very close match. Martin took the first set 7-6 after a tiebreaker then took the team point after winning the second set 6-3. Katharina Steib fell behind 1-0 to Sam Spady, then tied the set score at 1-1 after winning the second set 6-3. The third set was a back and forth battle, ending in a win for Spady after a 7-6 (4) tiebreaker.
Gabriella Guacanes got the Bears their first team point after back-to-back 6-2 set wins over Madelyn Hill. Elizabeth Davis lost 6-1 and 6-0 in her match against GC's Madelyn Gill.
The last two singles matches were nail biters. The fifth singles match featured Sara Contreras and Lydia Prince. Contreras won the match 2-0, but both sets required extras. The first set saw Contreras win a 7-6 (3) tiebreaker, then Contreras took the team point after a 7-5 win over Prince. Hannah Thompson rounded off the singles matches a 6-4, 6-4 win over Abby Moss, but the Tigers ultimately took the match 4-3.
UPIKE falls to 3-8 (1-4 MSC) after today's loss to the Tigers. The Bears will be back in action Saturday when they take on the UT-Southern Firehawks in Pulaski, Tenn.
