Bears Fall At UT-Southern

Pulaski, Tenn. – UPIKE fell 7-0 to the UT-Southern Firehawks Saturday afternoon. 

 

Doubles: 

Hannah Thompson and Elizabeth Davis fell 6-1 to Otone Odajima and Emely Castro to start off doubles play. The Firehawks' then secured the doubles team point after Margaret Lucas and Abbey Rumble won a narrow, 7-5 set over UPIKE's Genesis Medina and Gabriela Guacanes. The Bears did get one back, however, when Katharina Steib teamed up with Sara Contreras to take down Valeria Labrador and Victoria Sanches 6-2. UPIKE trailed 1-0 heading into the singles matches. 

 

Singles: 

Genesis Medina fell 6-4 in the first set against Margaret Lucas. The second set between Medina and Lucas required a tiebreaker, but Lucas took the 7-6 (4) win. Gabriela Guacanes fell 6-1, 6-3 to Otone Odajima, then Katharina Steib lost 6-3, 6-2 to Emely Castro to secure the match for UT-Southern. Elizabeth Davis and Sara Contreras both lost 2-0 in their singles matches. 

In the final singles match of the evening, Hannah Thompson was locked in a battle with Abbey Rumble. Rumble won a close, 7-5 decision in the first set. The second set required a tiebreaker, but was ultimately won by Rumble and UT-Southern took the match 7-0. 

 

Coach Cailee Marcum's squad will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at Cumberland University.
